Are You Ready for the Great California ShakeOut 2025?
The Great California ShakeOut is an annual earthquake drill held every third Thursday in October, providing millions of people across California with an opportunity to practice responding to an earthquake. This year’s drill is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 a.m.
Participants at work, school, or home will take a one-minute drill to practice the critical “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” actions—preparing themselves for what to do when an earthquake strikes.
Over the years, the ShakeOut has grown tremendously. In 2024, more than 10.2 million people participated across California alone. This year, more than 10 million participants are already registered. Be sure to register at ShakeOut.org and join this essential preparedness initiative.
Why Earthquake Preparedness Matters
Earthquakes can strike without warning—especially in states like California. The Great ShakeOut Day provides a valuable opportunity to review emergency procedures, test your protocols, and ensure everyone knows what to do. But preparedness is more than just drills.
For property owners and managers, true readiness comes from evaluating your building’s structural risks and taking proactive steps—such as seismic upgrades—to mitigate damage. Buildings constructed before 1997 are particularly vulnerable and benefit the most from retrofits.
