What is the status of the 2015 City of Los Angeles Seismic Retrofit Ordinance?

In 2015, the City of Los Angeles unanimously voted to pass the Seismic Retrofit Ordinance mandating vulnerable buildings, more specifically “soft-story” or “weak story” conditioned buildings subject to destruction from seismic activity be strengthened structurally or seismic retrofitted.

According to the Los Angeles Business Journal, “as of February 2020, 88% of buildings have completed step one, only 49% have completed step two, and 29% have completed the full retrofit construction.” So, what exactly are the steps?

Step 1 – By 2016, determine retrofit requirements

Step 2 – By 2017, acquire all permits

Step 3 – By 2022, perform seismic retrofits
